With over three million people currently enrolled through a private health insurance exchange and 40 million predicted to enroll by 2018, anticipated broad-scale adoption of private exchanges (both single and multi-insurer) is of great interest. We decided that now — halfway through 2014 — is an ideal time to connect with health insurance leaders to get their perspective on this rapidly changing marketplace.

Eighty-eight leaders from across the health insurance industry responded to the survey, which ran for one week in May 2014. The survey was sent to Atlantic Information Services (AIS) subscribers and attendees of the 2014 Blue National Summit held May 19-22 in Orlando, Florida.

Here are a few highlights:

  • More than 75% of respondents believe most insurers will offer private single-insurer exchanges by the end of 2016.
  • Almost 30% of respondents believe large groups are the primary market for private single-insurer exchanges.
  • 63% of health insurer respondents predict that the majority of employers will use a private exchange to provide benefits to their employees by the end of 2016.
